Who doesn't know Facebook? Facebook is a popular social networking website which provides us to connect with people around the world. In Facebook, we also can create profiles, create group, upload photos and videos, send messages, and write personal notes in our accounts. Facebook has active users that always increases in every years. The last on September 2012, Facebook has more than a million active users (http://id.wikipedia.org/wiki/Facebook). The research shows that how enthusiastic people in this world on Facebook are. Facebook can be accessed by all of ages because this website is one site that is easy to use.
This situation like this can be used for such things, like in teaching learning process. One survey in Australia shows that 65% students are lazy to study cause of Facebook. (udamaraya.com). From that case, it shows that students is more excited to get on Facebook than study more. Why don't we try to think to use this situation? The students choose to come online Facebook than studying because it can connect them to the every part of the world, be fun, and not make them bored. It's different with studying, the formal situation in classroom makes them getting pressured, bored, and sleepy which many teachers apply the conventional style of teaching learning process. This learning makes students become passive. So that's why , The teachers need to make Facebook is a part of the learning process.
Based on Dr. Mobrand highlight that Facebook offers some pedagogical advantages which are:
1. Engage student in a discussion
Dr. Mobrand says that the discussion on Facebook more easily to build than the face to face discussion. It because they have materials and planning that they get from such kinds of sources to give them more information to discuss. It makes them more ready to involve in discussion. The students participation increases to join in discussion.
2. Allow students to easily post and view video clips and pictures.
Facebook provides people to post and share information easily using pictures, video, notes, and etc. Dr. Mobrand realised that students found materials for learning that they can easily to relate to. The students become global people as we know their knowledge will be abroad because they are easy to get information on internet.
3. Bring the learning environment to student's social space.
Dr. Mobrand felt that Facebook increases accessibility and breaks down false boundaries. They will more confident to share and participate in discussion.
As students are socializing in their space, they find interesting articles and post them for the class to read. Facebook can be accessed by students everywhere and every time. So, using Facebook in class actually should be allowed for teacher. It means the teacher lets them to participate in a learning activities outside of the classroom.
I have experience when using Facebook in teaching learning. I think that the students participation get increasing in Facebook than the formal class.
1. Facebook can provide us to create large classes to discuss everything that we need to discuss. The teacher is only be a facilitator that guides us to discuss the issues. The result of our discussion can be reviewed in the classroom to check the understanding of student and also to make the students will be usual to involve themselves in the real situation.
2. Using Facebook makes the shy students are able to participate in the class discussion. So, everyone in the class has a role to join in the group's discussion.
3. When we don't have time to presentation. We can upload video in Facebook to make our friends can review our presentation to give suggestion or comment on presentation.
It was acknowledged that students are using Facebook for academic purposes on their own. This situation makes the student become individual to finish something without the instruction of the teacher. It shows that many students see a Facebook as a natural way to communicating with their peers on academic matters even the teacher do not ask them to do so. From those evidence and explaining, it is obvious that students are already using Facebook for learning purposes and so it's necessary for the teacher to make Facebook become part of their curriculum and exploit it to the benefit of both teacher and students.
